# AI Overviews

> AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answer boxes at the top of search results: when they trigger, what they cite, and what they do to clicks.

**AI Overviews** are the AI-generated summaries that [Google](https://metavert.io/google) places at the top of a search results page, answering the query directly and listing a handful of supporting links. They are the highest-reach form of [AI search](https://metavert.io/ai-search), because they appear inside ordinary Google results rather than in a separate product. A Pew survey fielded in February 2026 found that 60% of US adults read AI summaries in search results.

The short version of the evidence: AI Overviews appear on a minority of all queries but on most questions and comparisons, they increasingly cite pages that do not rank on page one, and they are associated with a large drop in clicks to the top organic result.

### When They Trigger

Trigger rates depend heavily on the query set being measured. Semrush found an AI Overview on 15.69% of 10 million keywords in November 2025, down from a peak of 24.61% in July 2025. An academic study of 55,393 queries (Xu, Iqbal and Montgomery, May 2026) put the overall rate at 13.7%, rising to 64.7% for queries phrased as questions.

Intent explains most of the spread. Seer Interactive's 2026 analysis of 5.47 million queries found an AI Overview on 95.4% of comparison queries and 85.9% of question-format queries, against 36% of informational queries and 5% of transactional ones. A business whose audience asks "what is", "how to" and "X vs Y" questions is far more exposed than one whose audience searches product names.

### What They Cite

The link between ranking and being cited has weakened sharply. Ahrefs reported in March 2026, across 863,000 keyword results pages and 4 million cited URLs, that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews rank in the organic top 10, 31.2% rank between 11 and 100, and 31.0% rank beyond position 100. The same company measured roughly 76% in the top 10 in July 2025. BrightEdge, using a different method, put the overlap at about 17% in February 2026. The two figures are not reconcilable, and both are worth knowing.

Ahrefs attributes the shift to [query fan-out](https://metavert.io/query-fan-out), in which Google issues several related searches and cites the pages that surface across them, and notes that AI Overviews moved to Gemini 3 in January 2026. Google's own documentation is plainer about eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and "there are no additional requirements."

The sources are concentrated and skew toward platforms. In Ahrefs' September 2026 tracking of more than 3 million US queries, [YouTube](https://metavert.io/youtube) held 22.9% of citations among the top-cited sources, [Reddit](https://metavert.io/reddit) 18.5%, Facebook 10.1%, Google's own properties 8.8% and [Wikipedia](https://metavert.io/wikipedia) 4.0%. A SIGIR 2026 paper (Grossman et al.) independently found that AI Overviews favour Google-owned properties.

Citations are also unstable. A peer-reviewed ACL Findings 2026 study found that two AI Overview runs two months apart shared only 18% of pages, compared with 45% for organic results. And citation is not verification: Xu and colleagues judged 11.0% of roughly 98,000 atomic claims in AI Overviews to be unsupported by the pages cited for them.

### Effect on Clicks

Ahrefs' February 2026 study of 300,000 keywords found that the presence of an AI Overview is associated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the first organic result, up from 34.5% in its April 2025 study. Seer Interactive's data shows a similar direction with a different shape, including a partial recovery in early 2026; the disagreement is covered under [zero-click search](https://metavert.io/zero-click-search). Seer also found that a brand cited inside the AI Overview earns 120% more organic clicks per impression than one that is not cited, which makes citation the main lever left on these results pages.

### How AI Overviews Differ From AI Mode

An AI Overview is a single generated answer embedded in a conventional results page, with ads and organic links still around it. [Google AI Mode](https://metavert.io/google-ai-mode) is a separate conversational surface where the user asks follow-up questions and the model keeps context. The two are now joined: since January 27, 2026, "Show more" on an AI Overview opens AI Mode, and Google said at I/O 2026 that follow-up questions flow directly from one into the other. Google states that both may use query fan-out, and both draw on the same index and eligibility rules. A side-by-side treatment is at [AI Overviews vs Google AI Mode](https://metavert.io/compare/ai-overviews-vs-google-ai-mode).

### In Practice

Two widely repeated tactics do not survive testing. Ahrefs' May 2026 difference-in-differences study of 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD against 4,000 matched controls found a 4.6% decline in AI Overview citations, and concluded that adding [schema](https://metavert.io/schema-markup) "produced no major uplift in citations on any platform." Google itself says no special files or markup are needed. What the citation data does support is breadth: covering the sub-questions around a topic, and being present on the third-party platforms that AI Overviews cite most.

Control is limited. Snippet directives such as `nosnippet` and `max-snippet` restrict what Google can show, and Google is testing a Search Console opt-out for AI Overviews and AI Mode under a UK Competition and Markets Authority order, initially in the UK only. Google-Extended governs model training, not appearance in AI Overviews.
