Comparison

[Claude Code](https://metavert.io/claude-code) and [Cursor](https://metavert.io/cursor) are two of the most widely used [AI coding agents](https://metavert.io/ai-coding-agents), and they began from different places. **Claude Code** is [Anthropic](https://metavert.io/anthropic)'s agent, built around a terminal CLI and powered exclusively by Claude models. **Cursor** is an AI code editor from Anysphere, which became part of SpaceX in August 2026, built around an editing surface with inline autocomplete and a choice of models from several labs, including its own.

The two have converged. Claude Code now has IDE extensions, a desktop app and cloud sessions, and Cursor now has a CLI and cloud agents. What still separates them is the default way of working (delegating to an agent versus editing alongside one), the model strategy and the way usage is priced. In JetBrains' developer survey for May to July 2026, 39% of professional developers reported using Claude Code at work and 12% reported using Cursor. Product details and prices below were checked on the vendors' own pages in October 2026.

## Detailed Analysis

### Delegating in a Terminal vs Editing in an IDE

Claude Code's documentation describes it as "an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools". The centre of gravity is the CLI: a developer states a goal, the agent plans, edits across files, runs tests and proposes commits, and the developer reviews. The VS Code extension, JetBrains plugin and desktop app add inline diffs and visual review, but they connect to the same engine and the same configuration. Because it is a command-line program, it also composes with scripts and CI in a way an editor does not, for example piping a log file into a one-off prompt.

Cursor starts from the editor. Tab autocomplete predicts the next edit as a developer types, a targeted edit can be requested on a selection, and the agent can be given larger tasks from the same window. Cursor's own site quotes Andrej Karpathy's description of this as an "autonomy slider". For developers who still write a meaningful share of code by hand and want AI assistance at every level of granularity, that range is Cursor's main advantage. Claude Code has no documented equivalent of keystroke-level completion, and developers who want both often run Claude Code's extension inside another editor, which Anthropic supports for both VS Code and Cursor.

### One Model Family vs Many

Claude Code runs Claude models only. The default is Opus 5.5 on paid plans and the API, with Sonnet 5.5 for everyday work, Haiku for simple tasks and the Fable models for the hardest and longest-running ones. Enterprises can route the same models through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry. The benefit is a harness tuned to one model family. The cost is that there is no fallback to another lab's model inside the product.

Cursor is a model marketplace. Its documentation lists first-party Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.7 alongside current Claude, GPT and Gemini models and several others. Since the SpaceX acquisition, Cursor has said it will use its parent's GPU fleet "to build stronger models that are also more economical to run", so its own models are likely to become a larger part of the default experience. Teams that want to compare labs task by task, or avoid dependence on one, get that from Cursor today. Teams that have already standardised on Claude get it in either product.

### Cloud Agents and Automation

Both products can run work away from the developer's machine. Claude Code's cloud sessions run on isolated, Anthropic-managed virtual machines with limited network access by default, can be started from a browser, phone, desktop app or the terminal, and can be pulled back into a local terminal. Anthropic states there is no separate compute charge; cloud sessions draw on the same usage limits as everything else on the account. Routines run sessions on a schedule or in response to API calls and GitHub events.

Cursor's cloud agents also run in isolated VMs, and can be launched from the editor, the web, the iOS app, Slack, GitHub or Bitbucket comments, Linear, or an API. They return pull requests with screenshots, videos and logs as evidence of what was done. They are billed at API pricing for the chosen model and require a spend limit, so heavy parallel use shows up directly on the bill. Cursor's Bugbot review product covers GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps as well as GitHub, which matters for teams not on GitHub; Claude Code's cloud sessions need GitHub to clone repositories and open pull requests.

### Pricing and Predictability

Entry prices match at $20 per month, and the structures then diverge. Claude Code is included in Claude subscriptions: Pro at $20, Max from $100 with five or twenty times Pro's usage, Team seats at $25 or $125, and an Enterprise plan at $20 per seat plus usage at API rates. Usage is governed by plan limits, not a metered balance. Cursor sells Pro at $20, Pro Plus at $60 and Ultra at $200, each with included usage and on-demand billing at API rates beyond it, and Teams at $40 per user. Cursor's own guidance is that daily agent users typically consume $60 to $100 per month in total and power users often $200 or more.

### Adoption and How Each Agent Picks Tools

JetBrains' survey of more than 15,000 professional developers, fielded May to July 2026, found 90% using AI coding agents at work at least weekly. Claude Code led at 39% of developers, followed by [GitHub Copilot](https://metavert.io/github-copilot) at 21%, [Codex](https://metavert.io/codex) at 16% and Cursor at 12%. These are usage shares, not exclusive choices, and many developers use more than one.

The agents also behave differently when asked to choose a dependency. Armature, a vendor, analysed 5,292 valid sessions across Claude Code, Codex and Cursor in September 2026 and reported that Claude Code searched the web in roughly 30% of sessions, while Cursor based its decision on the web in about two-thirds. All three agreed on the same tool only 42% of the time. The study does not state which model versions each agent ran, so it is best read as a snapshot: Claude Code leaned more on what the model already knew, and Cursor consulted current sources more often.

## Best For

#### Delegating multi-file tasks from the terminal

Claude Code

Claude Code is built around a CLI agent that plans, edits, runs tests and commits, and it scripts cleanly into shell pipelines and CI.

#### Writing code by hand with AI assistance

Cursor

Tab autocomplete and targeted in-editor edits cover the small-scale work that an agent-first tool does not.

#### Comparing or mixing models from several labs

Cursor

Cursor offers its own Composer and Grok models alongside Claude, GPT and Gemini in one model picker.

#### Standardising on Claude with cloud-provider billing

Claude Code

Claude Code can run through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry with the organisation's existing cloud controls.

#### Repositories on GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps

Cursor

Bugbot reviews pull requests on all four major hosts. Claude Code's cloud sessions require GitHub to clone and open pull requests.

#### Predictable monthly cost

Claude Code

Claude Code usage is covered by plan limits with no separate cloud compute charge. Cursor's cloud agents bill at API rates.

#### Scheduled and event-driven agent work

Depends

Claude Code has routines. Cursor has automations and triggers from Slack, GitHub and Linear. Both cover the common cases.

## The Bottom Line

Claude Code suits developers who have moved most of their work to delegation: describe the change, let the agent run, review the result. It is terminal-native, scriptable, tied to Anthropic's models, and priced as part of a Claude subscription. Its adoption lead in the JetBrains survey suggests this workflow has become mainstream among professional developers.

Cursor suits developers who want an editor first. It keeps keystroke-level assistance, lets a team choose among models from several labs, and extends into cloud agents and code review across more Git hosts. Its trade-offs are metered costs for heavy agent use and, since August 2026, an owner that competes with the labs whose models it resells, which makes its own models an increasingly important part of the product.

The two are not exclusive. Anthropic ships its extension for Cursor, and both products read AGENTS.md and connect to the same [Model Context Protocol](https://metavert.io/model-context-protocol) servers, so a team can keep shared instructions and tools while individuals choose their surface. A sensible default is to pick by working style, then revisit the choice when the pricing or model line-up changes, which in this market happens every few months.
