Comparison

Synthesia and HeyGen are the two largest companies making AI avatar video: a presenter, generated or cloned, speaking a script in any of well over a hundred languages. Both now sell to the same buyers, but they grew up serving different ones. London-based Synthesia, founded in 2017, built its business on corporate training and internal communications, and in January 2026 raised a $200 million Series E at a $4 billion valuation. Los Angeles-based HeyGen built its audience among marketers and creators, and reported $200 million in annual recurring revenue in June 2026.

Their 2026 releases reflect that split. Synthesia shipped Express-3, a full-body avatar model, and Style Avatars in July, and an agent called Syren that edits video through chat in October. HeyGen shipped Avatar V, which builds a digital twin from a 15-second video, plus a Video Agent that can produce videos up to 30 minutes long, and it now bundles third-party generative video models in its Pro plan. Both are part of a broader shift toward [digital humans](https://metavert.io/digital-humans) as a production format rather than a novelty.

This comparison covers avatars, translation, agents and APIs, pricing, and the consent and compliance controls that matter when a product's core feature is a synthetic person. Prices and features are as published on October 20, 2026.

## Detailed Analysis

### Positioning: Enterprise Learning vs Creator and Marketing Breadth

Synthesia's product is organized around the training department. SCORM export, LMS embeds that update in place when a video changes, PowerPoint import and translated versions of each course are core features, not add-ons, and the company says it is trusted by more than 90% of the Fortune 100 (a vendor claim). Its pace is deliberate: new avatar models arrive across all plans, and its new Syren agent is in beta with a three-minute cap.

HeyGen moves faster and wider. It ships more stock avatars (700+ against Synthesia's 240+ at the top tier), longer videos (up to 30 minutes on Creator and 60 on Business), a larger translation catalog and, on its Pro plan, access to third-party generative video models such as Seedance 2.0 and Veo 3.1 for B-roll. It also claims a large enterprise footprint, though its own pages give different figures (85% of the Fortune 100 on one, 80% on another). In practice HeyGen is the more natural fit for marketing, social and creator content, and Synthesia for structured internal content.

### Avatars and Realism

Synthesia's Express-3 model, launched in July 2026, produces full-body avatars whose delivery reacts to the sentiment of the script, and Style Avatars let one avatar appear in different looks. Personal avatars come in three kinds: photo-based, legacy video-based and studio (green-screen) avatars, the last available as a $1,000-a-year add-on on annual plans.

HeyGen's Avatar V, launched in April 2026, builds a digital twin from a 15-second video. It is metered at 48 credits per minute and, in Video Agent, limited to three-minute videos. HeyGen also sells a studio avatar shoot as a $1,000-a-year add-on. Both companies are now close enough on realism that the choice usually turns on workflow and price rather than quality; test both with your own presenter before committing. See [avatars](https://metavert.io/avatar) and [digital humans](https://metavert.io/digital-humans) for the broader technology.

### Translation and Localization

Localization is the strongest business case for avatar video, because re-recording a presenter in many languages is expensive. HeyGen's Video Translate covers 175+ languages and dialects on paid plans, with Speed and Precision modes and batches of up to 100 jobs through its API. HeyGen has demonstrated the feature widely, including in [this translation demo](https://metavert.io/videos/mindblowing-automated-translation-with-heygen-english-german-french-polish-hindi). Synthesia generates avatar video in 140+ languages on every plan, and dubs existing video into 70+ languages on self-serve plans and 140+ on Enterprise, with lip-sync costing double the credits. For dubbing live-action footage of real people, HeyGen offers more languages; for keeping a course library in sync across languages, Synthesia's LMS tooling is stronger. [AI dubbing and lip-sync](https://metavert.io/ai-dubbing) covers the underlying techniques.

### Agents, APIs and MCP

Both now expose themselves to AI agents through the [Model Context Protocol](https://metavert.io/model-context-protocol). HeyGen's remote MCP server uses OAuth, draws on plan credits and includes tools for creating videos and translations; it works with Claude, Cursor, Gemini CLI and Manus, alongside a public API, a command-line tool and agent skills. Synthesia's MCP server is in public beta, tested with Claude and ChatGPT, and requires a paid plan. For real-time use, such as a tutor or support agent with a face, Synthesia sells an Interactive Avatars API at $0.10 per minute for the avatar layer, while HeyGen spins real-time work out into a separate LiveAvatar product with its own plans.

The agent features inside each app differ in ambition. HeyGen's Video Agent aims to produce complete videos of up to 30 minutes from a prompt. Synthesia's Syren, launched in October 2026, focuses on editing through chat and is capped at three minutes during its beta.

### Pricing and Credits

Both start at $29 a month on monthly billing, but the tiers diverge. HeyGen is cheaper in the middle: Pro is $49 a month ($41 billed yearly) with 1,000 credits and 4K output, against Synthesia Pro at $89 ($64 billed yearly) with 6,000 credits, roughly 60 minutes of video, five personal avatars and interactive videos. HeyGen's Business plan ($149 a month plus $20 per seat) adds SSO, SCORM and 60-minute videos, features Synthesia reserves for its custom-priced Enterprise plan. Both use credits, so compare costs per finished minute for your mix of avatar video, translation and lip-sync rather than the headline price.

### Trust, Consent and Compliance

A product that can make anyone appear to say anything needs strong controls (see [deepfakes](https://metavert.io/deepfakes)). Both companies require a consent recording before creating a personal avatar. Synthesia requires a live consent video of the same person, with no uploads, as part of what it calls a biometric consent process. HeyGen requires a consent video of under 30 seconds reading a fixed statement, recorded at the same time as the avatar footage, and its moderation policy bans depicting real people or public figures without explicit consent and restricts political content.

On certifications Synthesia has the deeper portfolio: SOC 2 Type II since 2022, ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 42001 for AI management systems, which it announced as the first AI video company to hold. HeyGen lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, CCPA and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, supports SSO and SCIM, stores data in the US on AWS and excludes enterprise data from model training by default. Anyone publishing avatar video in Europe should also plan for the EU AI Act's transparency rules for synthetic content (Article 50), which have applied since August 2, 2026; see [AI content labeling](https://metavert.io/ai-content-labeling).

HeyGen

Videos run up to 30 minutes on Creator and 60 on Business; Synthesia's Syren agent is capped at three minutes in beta.

#### Agent-Driven Video Creation

Tie

Both offer MCP servers and APIs. HeyGen's is more mature; Synthesia's is in public beta.

#### Real-Time Interactive Avatars

Tie

Synthesia sells an interactive avatar API; HeyGen sells LiveAvatar separately. Compare latency and per-minute cost for your use case.

## The Bottom Line

Choose **Synthesia** if your videos live in a learning management system, your buyers run formal security reviews, or you value a steady product with strong governance. Its certifications, SCORM tooling and course-translation workflow are still the reference for enterprise training.

Choose **HeyGen** if you make marketing, social or creator content, need to translate real footage into many languages, or want the widest choice of avatars, lengths and bundled generative models at a lower mid-tier price. It ships faster, and its API and MCP tooling are more developed.

Both are mature enough that a short pilot with your own scripts and presenter will tell you more than any feature table. Whichever you choose, budget time for consent, disclosure and review: the hard part of avatar video in 2026 is no longer realism but responsible use.
