**Final Cut Pro** is Apple's professional video editing application for the Mac and iPad, known for its magnetic timeline and for speed on Apple silicon. It is one of the two leading professional editors that can still be bought without a subscription, alongside [DaVinci Resolve](https://metavert.io/davinci-resolve), and in 2026 Apple moved it quickly into AI features that run on the device. As of October 2026 the current version is 12.4 (September 29, 2026), and it is sold both as a one-time purchase and inside the Apple Creator Studio subscription bundle.

### History

Final Cut began at Macromedia; [Apple](https://metavert.io/apple) acquired the development team in 1998 and released Final Cut Pro at NAB in April 1999. In 2011 Apple replaced it with Final Cut Pro X, a complete 64-bit rewrite built around the magnetic timeline, a trackless design in which clips close gaps and stay in sync as they move. Apple dropped the "X" with version 10.5 in 2020, launched Final Cut Pro for iPad on May 23, 2023, and released version 11 on November 13, 2024 with an AI-powered Magnetic Mask and spatial video editing.

### Features as of October 2026

- **Search by speech and picture.** Final Cut Pro 12.0 (January 2026) added Transcript Search, which finds a moment by what was said, and Visual Search, which finds it by what is on screen, both running locally on Apple silicon.
- **Assistive AI.** Version 12.3 (June 2026) added Generate Captions from speech, Edit Detection for finding the cuts in already-edited footage, Auto Mask and Match Color; Beat Detection lines edits up with music. Transcript Search, Visual Search and Generate Captions work in US English only.
- **Version 12.4.** Adds editing of Cinematic-mode clips recorded in Apple's Final Cut Camera app.
- **Interchange.** Timelines move to other tools through FCPXML, now at version 1.14 (see [timeline interchange](https://metavert.io/edit-decision-list)).

Final Cut Pro has no MCP server or agent connection. Automation runs through FCPXML, which outside tools can generate and Final Cut Pro can import, so AI tools that make a first cut usually hand it over as an FCPXML file.

### Price

Final Cut Pro for Mac costs $299.99 as a one-time purchase. Apple Creator Studio, launched on January 28, 2026 at $12.99 a month or $129 a year, bundles it with Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion and Compressor, with an education price of $2.99 a month. New users who want Final Cut Pro for iPad get it only through Creator Studio.

### How It Compares

Against DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro is faster and simpler for Mac users and keeps its AI features private on the device, while Resolve runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, leads in color and audio finishing, has a capable free version, and, since 21.1, can be operated by AI assistants through MCP. Against [Adobe Premiere](https://metavert.io/adobe-premiere), it avoids the subscription and is faster on Apple hardware, while Premiere offers generative video in the timeline, cross-platform support and the Creative Cloud ecosystem. Its gaps in 2026 are English-only transcription features, Apple-only platforms and no way for an outside agent to drive it, which matters as [agentic video editing](https://metavert.io/agentic-video-editing) spreads.
