**Haptics** is the science and technology of touch-based interaction with digital systems—encompassing vibrotactile feedback, force feedback, texture simulation, and thermal sensation. Haptic technology creates the physical dimension of digital [experiences](https://metavert.io/experiences).

Consumer haptics have advanced beyond simple vibration motors. Apple's Taptic Engine and similar linear actuators provide nuanced force feedback in smartphones, watches, and game controllers. The PlayStation 5's DualSense controller demonstrated how adaptive triggers and precision haptics can transform gameplay—simulating bowstring tension, surface textures, and environmental resistance. Meta's Quest controllers and hand tracking system provide increasingly natural interaction in [virtual reality](https://metavert.io/virtual-reality).

Research-grade haptics are pushing toward full tactile immersion. Ultrasonic haptics (from companies like Ultraleap) project touch sensations into mid-air without any wearable device. Haptic gloves from Meta Reality Labs and HaptX simulate object weight, texture, and resistance with mechanical actuators on each finger. Electrotactile and skin-stretch technologies promise thinner, lighter wearable haptics. The challenge remains miniaturizing these systems into consumer-grade form factors.

For [spatial computing](https://metavert.io/spatial-computing) and the metaverse, haptics address a fundamental gap: vision and sound have crossed into digital fidelity, but touch remains primitive. As [AR](https://metavert.io/augmented-reality) and VR experiences become more sophisticated, the absence of physical feedback becomes the uncanny valley of interaction. Haptics also have critical applications in [telepresence](https://metavert.io/telepresence), surgical robotics, industrial training, and accessibility—anywhere the sense of touch carries information that vision alone cannot convey.
