Industry Application

Short-Form Video Local Businesses

**Short-form video for local businesses** is the use of brief vertical clips on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts to be discovered and chosen by nearby customers. For a local business the format has a specific and limited job. It will almost never be the thing an AI assistant cites when it recommends a business, and it is one of the places customers go to decide whether a recommendation is worth acting on. Treating [short-form video](https://metavert.io/short-form-video) as a citation tactic misreads the evidence; treating it as proof and reach does not.

## Where Local Customers Watch

SOCi's Local Discovery Index (September 2026, more than 1,000 US consumers) asked people who search socially for local businesses which platforms they use. Facebook led at 73%, followed by YouTube at 69%, Instagram at 67% and TikTok at 50%. The ordering is worth noticing: the platform most associated with short video is fourth, and Facebook is first.

The same survey found 59% of consumers saying a social post or video had directly turned them into a customer of a local business. The effect is strongly generational: 70% of millennials, 54% of Generation X, 52% of Generation Z and 22% of baby boomers. The question covers social posts of any kind, so the figure is an upper bound on what video alone achieves, and it is self-reported. Separately, Adobe Express (February 2026, n=807) found 49% of consumers have used TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% in 2024, though that survey was not specific to local queries.

## Why Assistants Rarely Cite It

Short clips are scarce in AI answers on every public measure. Otterly's September 2026 index put TikTok at 0.023% and Instagram at 0.063% of all AI citations, and its earlier study of YouTube found Shorts made up 5.7% of YouTube citations against 94% for long-form video. A check of robots.txt files in September 2026 found tiktok.com and instagram.com disallowing the crawlers of OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity while allowing Googlebot and Bingbot. A Reel about a bakery's new opening hours is, for ChatGPT, a page it is not permitted to fetch.

None of this research is specific to local businesses. It measures the platforms as a whole, and there is no public study of how often local short-form video in particular is cited. The general pattern is strong enough that a local business should not expect an exception.

## The Google Exception

Google can read what the others cannot. Public posts and Reels from professional Instagram accounts have been indexable by Google since July 10, 2025. BrightEdge (July 2026) counted Facebook cited in 19.5 million AI Overview answers, Instagram in 877,000 and TikTok in 78,000. Goodie's 2026 study of social citations found Instagram and Facebook citations sitting almost entirely on Google surfaces. For a local business this means social content has a path into [Google AI Overviews](https://metavert.io/ai-overviews) and no reliable path into other assistants, and that Facebook is cited far more often than the platforms built around short video. These counts include every kind of post, so they show that the platform is visible to Google, not that clips are what gets cited.

## What the Video Does in the Verification Loop

The stronger argument for short-form video comes from what customers do after an assistant gives them a name. SOCi found 81% verify an AI recommendation before making contact, and 20% of respondents do it by checking the business's social media, second only to the 33% who read reviews. A feed of recent clips answers the questions a recommendation leaves open: whether the business is still trading, what the premises and the work look like, who the people are. An account whose last post is two years old answers them too, in the wrong direction.

This places short-form video after the recommendation rather than before it. The assistant supplies the name from text sources such as websites, listings and reviews. The video supplies the reassurance. That sequence is an interpretation of survey data and has not been tracked as a measured funnel.

## A Sensible Division of Labour

The evidence supports using each format for what it does. Clips go to the platforms customers check, including Facebook, with the business name, location and service stated in the caption and on screen so that Google and human viewers can both identify it. Material intended for AI answers goes where engines can read it: the website's service pages, the [Google Business Profile](https://metavert.io/google-business-profile), and for businesses willing to make them, longer YouTube videos with full descriptions and chapters, the format that research on [video GEO](https://metavert.io/video-geo) finds is actually cited. HubSpot's 2026 marketing statistics show marketers rating short-form video the top format for return, 49% against 29% for long-form, but that is a cross-industry survey of marketers and says nothing about a single-location business with no marketing staff.

## Applications & Use Cases

#### Proof of Life

Regular clips of the premises, staff and current work show a customer checking an AI recommendation that the business is open and active. A fifth of consumers check social accounts before acting on one.

#### Showing the Work

Before-and-after footage for trades, plated dishes for restaurants, finished cuts for salons. The clip does what a text listing cannot, which is to let the customer judge quality directly.

#### Answering One Question per Clip

A short answer to a question customers ask at the counter, titled as the question. On YouTube Shorts and Instagram this is content Google can index, and it doubles as raw material for a longer video.

#### Posting Where the Customers Are

Facebook and YouTube lead local social search in SOCi's data, ahead of Instagram and TikTok. The same clip can be published to all four at little extra cost.

#### Clips Cut from a Longer Video

One longer walkthrough published on YouTube with chapters serves AI citation; excerpts from it serve the feeds. The business records once and covers both jobs.

#### Keeping Facts Aligned

Hours, address and offers shown in a clip or bio should match the website and listings. Customers who verify notice a mismatch, and 67% of AI users have already met wrong local information once.

## Key Players

- **Facebook** — The most-used platform for social local search (73% in SOCi's 2026 survey) and by far the most-cited social network in Google AI Overviews per BrightEdge.
- **YouTube** — Used by 69% of social local searchers; hosts Shorts and the long-form video AI engines cite; its robots.txt has no AI-specific blocks.
- **Instagram** — Used by 67%; Reels from professional accounts are indexable by Google; blocks most non-Google AI crawlers.
- **TikTok** — Used by 50%; nearly half of consumers have used it as a search engine (Adobe Express); blocks most non-Google AI crawlers.
- **Google** — The one AI search provider that crawls all four platforms and cites them in AI Overviews.
- **SOCi, BrightEdge, Otterly, Goodie and Adobe Express** — Publishers of the survey and citation data cited here.

## Challenges & Considerations

- **No direct AI payoff** — Clips on TikTok and Instagram cannot be fetched by most AI assistants, and Shorts are a small share of YouTube citations. Effort spent on short video does not substitute for readable text sources.
- **Attribution** — The claim that social video converts local customers rests on self-reported survey answers. A small business has few ways to tie a clip to a sale beyond asking customers.
- **Consistency over time** — An abandoned account is worse evidence than none when a customer comes to verify. The format rewards a sustainable routine over an occasional burst.
- **Audience mismatch** — The conversion effect is weakest among baby boomers (22%). A business with an older clientele should weigh the effort accordingly.
- **Thin local evidence** — Citation studies measure platforms as a whole, and marketer ROI surveys are cross-industry. Nothing public measures short-form video's results for independent local businesses specifically.
