**Remotion** is an open-source framework, and the Swiss company of the same name, for making videos programmatically with React. Each frame of a Remotion video is a render of React components given the current frame number, and a headless browser captures the frames and encodes them into a video file. That makes it the best-known tool for [motion graphics as code](https://metavert.io/motion-graphics-as-code) and a common renderer in [video as code](https://metavert.io/video-as-code) pipelines. As of October 2026 it is at version 4.0.537 (released October 19, 2026), has about 65,000 GitHub stars, and ships official skills that teach AI coding agents to write Remotion code.

### How It Works

A Remotion composition is a React component that reads the current frame and the video's settings (size, frame rate, duration) and returns what should be on screen at that moment. Animation is a function of time: a value is interpolated between frame 0 and frame 30, and the component renders accordingly. Anything HTML, CSS, SVG, canvas or WebGL can draw can appear in a video, and everything a React developer already knows (components, props, data fetching) carries over. Because each frame can be rendered independently, a long render can be split across many machines.

The toolkit around that model includes:

- **Remotion Studio**, a local preview and editing environment.
- **Server rendering** through Node.js and Bun APIs, distributed rendering on AWS Lambda (its recommended option) and Vercel Sandbox, with a Cloud Run option described as alpha.
- **Client-side rendering** in the browser with WebCodecs, stable since v4.0.491 for a subset of elements.
- **@remotion/player**, which embeds compositions in any React app with inputs set at runtime, so products can show previews before a server render.

### Built for AI Agents

Language models now write much of the code in programmatic video, and Remotion has leaned into that more than any rival. It publishes 12 official Agent Skills, installed with `npx skills add remotion-dev/skills`, that teach Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents to write correct Remotion code (see [SKILL.md](https://metavert.io/SKILL.md)), plus "Prompt to Video" and "Prompt to Motion Graphics" starter templates. React's presence in model training data helps too: [AI coding agents](https://metavert.io/ai-coding-agents) already know its idioms. Running AI-written components in a render pipeline is a security question as well as a quality one, because code that renders in a browser can reach the network and import packages, so pipelines that accept generated components typically sandbox the renderer and review the exact code that runs (see [agent sandboxes](https://metavert.io/agent-sandbox)).

### License and Company

Remotion was started by Zurich-based developer Jonny Burger; its GitHub repository dates from June 2020, and the company was founded in 2021. The code is public, but it uses its own source-available Remotion License rather than an open-source license. Individuals, for-profit companies with up to three employees, non-profits and evaluation use need no company license; companies of four or more do. As of October 2026 the company license costs $25 a month per seat for Creators, $0.01 per render with a $100 monthly minimum for Automators (rendering as a service), or Enterprise from $500 a month. The license does not allow reselling derivatives, and a proposed Remotion 5.0 change would count contractors toward team size.

### How It Compares

Its closest open-source rival, [Motion Canvas](https://metavert.io/motion-canvas), models animation as TypeScript generator functions in a real-time editor and suits narrated vector explainers. It is MIT-licensed, but its core repository has not shipped a release since December 2024, and development has moved to forks such as Canvas Commons and Revideo. JSON-to-video APIs such as Shotstack sit at the other end, trading flexibility for a hosted service. Remotion's combination of active releases, cloud and browser rendering, embedding and agent support has made it the default for data-driven and templated video in 2026; the cost is a company license once an organization reaches four people. See [Remotion vs Motion Canvas](https://metavert.io/compare/remotion-vs-motion-canvas) for a detailed comparison and [video as code vs nonlinear editing](https://metavert.io/compare/video-as-code-vs-nonlinear-editing) for where it fits against timeline editors. Its approach overlaps with [vibe coding](https://metavert.io/vibe-coding) and [AI code generation](https://metavert.io/ai-code-generation) more broadly.
