# Short-Form Video

> Short-form video is vertical, feed-delivered video lasting seconds to a few minutes. AI engines rarely cite it, but it drives discovery and sales.

**Short-form video** is vertical video lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes, delivered through an algorithmic feed rather than found by search: [TikTok](https://metavert.io/tiktok), Instagram Reels, [YouTube](https://metavert.io/youtube) Shorts and their equivalents on Facebook and [LinkedIn](https://metavert.io/linkedin). It is the format marketers rate highest for return and the format consumers increasingly search inside. It is also the format AI answer engines cite least. Its role in AI visibility is therefore indirect: short-form video builds the demand and brand familiarity that show up elsewhere, while the citations themselves go to other kinds of content.

### Rarely Cited Directly

The numbers are small on every measure available. In Otterly's study of more than 100 million YouTube citation instances (March 2026), Shorts made up 5.7% of YouTube citations against 94% for long-form video. Otterly's September 2026 index put TikTok at 0.023% and Instagram at 0.063% of all AI citations. These are correlational counts from a vendor of AI-visibility software and they shift month to month, but no dataset in the public record shows short-form video as a meaningful direct source for AI answers.

Part of the reason is structural. A short clip offers little text for an engine to match against a question: a brief caption, a few hashtags and a transcript of a few dozen seconds. The research on [video GEO](https://metavert.io/video-geo) finds that citation follows the fit between a query and a video's title and description, and long descriptions with chapters give engines far more to work with.

### The Crawler Wall

The other reason is access. A check of robots.txt files on September 28, 2026 found that tiktok.com and instagram.com disallow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, among other [AI crawlers](https://metavert.io/ai-crawlers), while allowing Googlebot and Bingbot. An assistant that cannot fetch a page cannot cite it, so content on those two platforms is largely invisible to ChatGPT-style assistants regardless of its quality. YouTube's robots.txt carries no AI-specific blocks, which is one reason Shorts appear in citation data at all.

### Visible on Google's Surfaces

Google is the exception because Google can crawl what others cannot. Public posts and Reels from professional Instagram accounts have been indexable by Google since July 10, 2025. BrightEdge (July 2026) counted Facebook cited in 19.5 million [AI Overview](https://metavert.io/ai-overviews) answers, Instagram in 877,000 and TikTok in 78,000, and estimated that one in 15 searches is answered using social media. Goodie's study of 1.86 million social citations across ten AI surfaces (January to August 2026) found Instagram and Facebook citations sitting almost entirely on Google surfaces, and TikTok roughly doubling from a small base. Those counts cover all content on the platforms, not video alone, and the spread between Facebook and TikTok is more than two orders of magnitude.

### LinkedIn as the Exception

LinkedIn behaves differently from the consumer platforms. Its robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot and ChatGPT-User but allows OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot, the crawlers that build search indexes. Goodie found LinkedIn growing from roughly 8% of pooled social citations in late May 2026 to about a fifth by August, and Otterly put it at 0.495% of all AI citations in September 2026, several times the share of Instagram or TikTok. Roughly nine of every ten cited LinkedIn URLs sit outside the company page, on posts and profiles of individuals. The evidence concerns LinkedIn content in general, so it supports posting there as people rather than as a logo; it does not show that LinkedIn video specifically is cited.

### Where the Value Actually Is

Short-form video earns its place through people, not crawlers. Adobe Express (February 2026, n=807) found 49% of consumers have used TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% in 2024. HubSpot's 2026 marketing statistics list short-form video as the top format for return on investment, named by 49% of marketers against 29% for long-form. In SOCi's Local Discovery Index (September 2026), 59% of consumers said a social post or video had directly turned them into a customer of a local business.

There is also a plausible second-order effect on AI answers. Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands (December 2025) found that brand mentions across the web and on YouTube correlate more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks do, and Similarweb data reported by Search Engine Journal (June 2026) found that most visits following a ChatGPT brand recommendation arrived through branded search. Short-form video is one of the cheaper ways to create the awareness that produces mentions and branded searches. That chain is an inference from correlations, and no study has measured it end to end. The defensible position is to use short-form video for reach and conversion, and to put the material meant for [AI citation](https://metavert.io/ai-citations) in formats the engines can read.
