Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) use AI, sensor arrays, and high-performance computing to perceive their environment, plan routes, and control vehicle movement without human intervention. They represent one of the most ambitious applications of AI in the physical world — a domain where the stakes of failure are measured in human lives and the technical challenges span perception, prediction, planning, and control under uncertainty.

The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) defines six levels of autonomy, from Level 0 (no automation) to Level 5 (full autonomy in all conditions). Most deployed systems operate at Level 2-3 (driver assistance with some autonomous capability) or Level 4 (full autonomy within a defined operational domain). As of early 2026, true Level 5 autonomy — a vehicle that can drive anywhere a human can, in any conditions — remains an unsolved problem.

The sensor stack varies by approach. Waymo and most robotaxi operators use a combination of LiDAR, cameras, and radar — the theory being that sensor redundancy provides safety margins (if one sensor fails or is confused, others compensate). Tesla's approach uses cameras only, arguing that since humans drive with vision alone, a sufficiently advanced AI can do the same. This architectural debate has practical implications: LiDAR adds cost and complexity but provides direct distance measurement; camera-only requires the AI to infer depth from 2D images, a harder computer vision problem but one that's tractable with enough training data and compute.

The AI pipeline in an AV is a compressed version of the full autonomy stack. Perception: identify and classify every object in the scene (vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signs, lane markings) from raw sensor data. Prediction: forecast where each object will be in the next 5-10 seconds. Planning: determine the vehicle's optimal trajectory considering predicted movements, traffic rules, and passenger comfort. Control: translate the planned trajectory into steering, acceleration, and braking commands.

World models are increasingly central to AV development. Rather than hand-coding rules for every driving scenario, modern approaches train models on massive driving datasets to learn the dynamics of traffic — how other drivers behave, how pedestrians move, how weather affects road conditions. This learned understanding enables handling of edge cases (unusual situations) that rule-based systems miss.

Commercially, Waymo operates robotaxi services in multiple US cities (San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles), completing millions of autonomous rides. Cruise paused operations after incidents but represents the challenge of scaling safely. Chinese companies (Baidu Apollo, Pony.ai, WeRide) have deployed extensively in Chinese cities. The autonomous trucking sector (Aurora, Kodiak, TuSimple) targets long-haul highway routes where conditions are more predictable.

The economic implications are vast. Autonomous trucking could address the driver shortage while reducing transportation costs. Robotaxis could reshape urban transportation, reducing car ownership and parking demand. Combined with smart city infrastructure and 5G connectivity, autonomous vehicles are a key component of future urban mobility systems.
