Final Cut Pro vs DaVinci Resolve
ComparisonFinal Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve are the two leading professional editors that can still be bought without a subscription, and in 2026 both moved quickly on AI. Apple shipped Final Cut Pro 12.0 in January with on-device Transcript Search and Visual Search, added Generate Captions, Auto Mask, Match Color and Edit Detection in 12.3 in June, and began selling it inside the Apple Creator Studio bundle. Blackmagic Design released Resolve 21 in June with IntelliSearch, IntelliScript and an AI Speech Generator, then Resolve 21.1 on 2026-09-08, which connects Resolve to AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code and Codex.
They remain different tools for different people. Final Cut Pro is a Mac and iPad editor built around speed: a magnetic timeline, fast performance on Apple silicon and AI features that run on the device. Resolve is a cross-platform post-production suite that grew out of color grading and now spans editing, color, audio and effects, with a free version and a one-time Studio license.
This comparison covers price, AI features, agent access, finishing and interchange as of October 2026.

Detailed Analysis
Price and Licensing
Both avoid the Adobe-style subscription, but in different ways. Final Cut Pro is still sold once, at $299.99 for the Mac, and Apple now also offers it in Apple Creator Studio, launched on 2026-01-28 at $12.99 a month or $129 a year, with Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion and Compressor included and an education price of $2.99 a month. New users who want Final Cut Pro for iPad get it only through Creator Studio.
Resolve's free version is unusually complete: it edits, grades and mixes up to UHD at 60 frames per second in 8-bit. The Studio license, $295 once and on sale for $236 in October 2026, adds the Neural Engine AI tools, 10-bit and higher frame rates, resolutions beyond UHD and more effects. For a team on Windows or Linux, or one that wants a capable editor at no cost, Resolve has no rival at this level.
AI Features
Apple's approach is on-device and search-led. Transcript Search finds a moment by what was said and Visual Search by what is on screen, both running locally on Apple silicon; Generate Captions writes captions from speech; Edit Detection finds the cuts in already-edited footage; Auto Mask isolates subjects; Match Color matches shots; and Beat Detection lines edits up with music. The limits are language and platform: Transcript Search, Visual Search and Generate Captions work in US English only. The newest release, 12.4, added editing of Cinematic-mode clips recorded in Apple's Final Cut Camera app rather than new AI tools.
Blackmagic's AI is broader. IntelliSearch finds people, objects and dialogue across a project. IntelliScript reads a script in Final Draft or plain text, matches it against transcripts and assembles a first cut, an automated version of transcript-based editing. The AI Speech Generator creates speech in a voice learned from about ten seconds of audio, which is useful for temp lines and fixes and raises the same consent questions as any voice cloning. Many of Resolve's AI tools run on its Neural Engine, which requires Studio.
Agents and Automation
This is the sharpest difference in 2026. Resolve 21.1 "supports integration with AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex", in Blackmagic's words, to organize media, adjust settings and batch render. Reporting by CineD describes it as a native Model Context Protocol server and says it, along with Python scripting, is now Studio-only; Blackmagic's release does not say so, though its Studio page lists Python and Lua scripting as Studio features. The same release added 20 scripting APIs and a console. That makes Resolve, as of October 2026, the major professional editor that an AI agent can operate most directly (see video editing MCP servers).
Final Cut Pro has no agent connection or MCP server. Automation around it runs through FCPXML, which outside tools can generate and Final Cut Pro can import. For editors interested in agentic video editing, that is a real gap.
Color, Audio and Finishing
Resolve began as a color-grading system and is still the reference for it, with dedicated pages for editing, color, audio and visual effects in one application and multicam editing of up to 25 angles as of 21.1, which also added individual HDR trims. A project can move from cut to grade to mix without leaving the program, which is why Resolve is common in finishing houses.
Final Cut Pro's color tools are good for most editors, and Match Color in 12.3 speeds up shot matching. For heavier finishing, Apple's path runs through Motion for graphics, Logic Pro for audio and Compressor for delivery, now bundled in Creator Studio, or through export to a dedicated grading tool.
Speed, Platforms and Interchange
Final Cut Pro's magnetic timeline and tight integration with Apple silicon make it one of the fastest editors to cut with on a Mac. Resolve runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, which makes it the practical choice for mixed-platform teams and Linux workstations. For moving edits between them and other tools, Final Cut Pro speaks FCPXML, now at version 1.14, while Resolve imports and exports OpenTimelineIO natively (see OpenTimelineIO vs FCPXML).

A creative bundle for solo creators
Final Cut ProCreator Studio adds Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion and Compressor for $12.99 a month.
Letting an AI agent operate the editor
DaVinci ResolveResolve 21.1 connects to Claude, Claude Code and Codex; Final Cut Pro has no agent connection.
The Bottom Line
Final Cut Pro is the better editor for Mac users who value speed and simplicity. Its 2026 AI features are practical and private, running on the device, and Creator Studio makes it a strong value for solo creators who also need audio, image and motion tools. Its gaps are English-only transcription features, Apple-only platforms and no way for an AI agent to drive it.
DaVinci Resolve is the better choice for almost everyone else: cross-platform teams, colorists and finishers, anyone on a budget, and anyone who wants an agent to help operate the editor. Its free version is generous and its Studio license is a one-time cost.
