Composability Is the Most Powerful Creative Force in the Universe

Compose, component, combine, compound, composability—all from the same Latin root, com, meaning together. What we can accomplish together is more powerful than any one of us can do alone. This is composability: the most powerful creative force in the universe.

Why Composability Matters

Life itself is more about information than energy. Fire eats, grows, and reproduces—but it retains no information. It doesn't learn or adapt. Composability is the force that drives learning and adaptation, from the mitochondria that aggregated into eukaryotic cells billions of years ago to the mycelium networks beneath the forest floor to the neural circuits that wire and fire together in our brains.

The same principle holds in technology and culture. Composability is at work when a DJ samples a track, when you post a TikTok duet, when you download a Minecraft mod, when you pull code from an open-source repository, and when you link high-speed CPUs and GPUs together. Jim Barksdale's famous observation—that bundling and unbundling are the only ways to make money in business—is really about composability.

Composable Experiences

Some of the most successful games in history began as mods: Dota and Counter-Strike spawned entirely new genres through composition. Minecraft is an entire platform for composability. I've often called Dungeons & Dragons the first metaverse—an imaginative space with enough structure for collaborative storytelling, with persistent worlds, shared economies, and player agency over the environment. The line between creator and player has been blurring since the Dungeon Master role was invented.

Roblox embodies this at platform scale: simple tools, interoperable frameworks, a marketplace for exchanging components, and social systems for discovery. Its genius is harnessing the collective creativity of its community through the principles of composability.

Composability in the Agentic Era

The agentic web is composability unleashed. AI agents compose services from whatever sources serve users best, transacting through open protocols like MCP, ACP, and x402. The Model Context Protocol provides a universal standard for tool access—the equivalent of USB-C for AI applications. When agents can seamlessly weave together data from any web-native source, the value shifts from platforms that hoard data to agents that orchestrate it.

This is why the open web wins. It is the ultimate composable substrate—URL-addressable, permissionless, and flexible enough to serve as both canvas and runtime for dynamic creation.

Designing for Composability

Composability is a mindset as much as a technology. Start with your own team: make the path to creation as easy as possible. Emphasize reuse and learning. Prefer frameworks that unleash creativity rather than constrain it. Then challenge yourself to turn partners and customers into creators alongside you—increase the surface area of co-creation.

Sometimes gatekeepers seek to limit composability. Walled gardens, proprietary lock-in, and rent-seeking intermediaries all work against it. But composability always reasserts itself, because the aggregate output of many participants composing and recombining shared primitives will always outpace the output of a few specialists working in isolation.
