Digital Humans
Digital humans are photorealistic virtual representations of people — rendered in real time with sufficient fidelity to be indistinguishable from (or deliberately stylized beyond) real human appearance. They sit at the intersection of 3D graphics, AI, and interaction design, representing one of the most technically challenging and commercially significant frontiers in computing.

AI is transforming digital human creation in two directions. Generation: diffusion models and GANs can synthesize photorealistic faces, and emerging systems generate full 3D head models from single photographs. Animation: generative animation driven by audio, text, or emotional parameters enables digital humans to converse, emote, and react in real time without pre-recorded performance capture.
The convergence with large language models creates digital humans that don't just look human but interact humanly. AI-powered virtual assistants, customer service agents, virtual influencers, and NPC characters in games combine realistic appearance with intelligent conversational ability. Companies like Soul Machines, Synthesia, and HeyGen have built businesses around AI-driven digital human interactions.
For the creator economy, the democratization of digital human technology follows the familiar pattern. What required a team of 50+ specialists at a film VFX studio five years ago can increasingly be accomplished by a solo creator with the right tools.
