Eddie AI

Eddie AI is an AI assistant editor for professional video teams. It does the preparation work an assistant editor would usually do: it logs and transcribes footage, separates interviews from B-roll, syncs multicam shoots, builds selects and assembles a rough cut. It then hands the result to the editor's own software as a native project. It's made by Press Play Labs, Inc. Its CEO and co-founder, Shamir Allibhai, previously founded Simon Says, an AI transcription and captioning service for video professionals. Eddie's design premise is that professionals will keep finishing in their usual editor, so the AI's job is to deliver a clean starting point, not to replace the timeline.

Eddie v4

Version 4, released on September 8, 2026, widened Eddie's scope from trimming to the whole first cut. In the company's words: "The old Eddie trimmed a timeline. This one watches your rushes, finds the story, syncs your cameras, names who is on which angle, writes the music, sources the b-roll, and hands the finished cut" to the editor. Its main capabilities:

  • Logging: interview transcripts searchable in 97 languages, and B-roll tagged by subject and movement.
  • Multicam sync: automatic sync by audio or timecode, with speaker identification and angles labeled by face.
  • Rough cuts: a first edit assembled automatically from the logged footage, the software equivalent of an assistant's paper edit.
  • Generation: original music, voiceover and dubbing, stock B-roll sourcing and AI-generated B-roll.
  • Finishing aids: word-level captions, motion-graphics templates and auto-reframing for vertical formats.

Eddie exports native Premiere projects (.prproj), DaVinci Resolve projects (.drp) and FCPXML for Final Cut Pro. An extension for Avid gives Media Composer rooms the same hand-off, and an MP4 with audio stems is also available. It connects to Google Drive, Dropbox, Frame.io, iconik, LucidLink, YouTube, Blackmagic Cloud and Premiere Productions. Pricing is credit-based with no required subscription, and the first 500 credits are free.

Night Shift and the Agent Interface

The previous version's headline feature, shown at NAB 2026, was Night Shift: an editor submits raw footage before leaving, from the desktop app or through cloud storage such as Frame.io, Google Drive or Dropbox, and finds a rough cut waiting the next morning. Version 4 adds an API and an MCP server, which the company lists with 113 tools, so coding agents and AI assistants can drive the same operations. That puts Eddie among the editors an AI agent can operate directly (see video editing MCP servers).

How It Compares

Eddie sits between two groups. Editors such as Descript keep the edit inside their own application, while Premiere's AI Assistant and Paper Edit, and Resolve's IntelliScript and MCP server, bring AI into the professional editor itself. Eddie works outside the editor and delivers into it, which suits teams with established finishing workflows. Its closest relatives are other agentic video editing tools that export to traditional timelines. How much detail survives the trip depends on the interchange format (see timeline interchange).
