Prompt Engineering
Prompt engineering is the discipline of crafting instructions, context, and constraints that effectively guide large language models and other AI systems to produce desired outputs. It has become a core skill for anyone working with AI—from developers building AI agents to creators using generative AI tools.
The fundamental insight is that the quality of AI output is directly proportional to the quality of the instruction. A vague prompt produces vague results. A well-structured prompt that provides clear context, specifies the desired format, includes relevant examples, and defines constraints produces dramatically better output. The same model can appear mediocre or extraordinary depending on how it's prompted.
Key techniques include few-shot learning (providing examples of desired input-output pairs), chain-of-thought prompting (asking the model to reason step by step), role assignment (directing the model to adopt a specific expert perspective), and structured output formatting (specifying JSON, markdown, or other formats). System prompts establish persistent behavioral guidelines for ongoing conversations.
In the context of agentic engineering, prompt engineering takes on additional dimensions. Agent system prompts define not just how the agent responds but how it plans, what tools it uses, when it asks for clarification, and how it handles errors. The prompt becomes the specification for autonomous behavior—making prompt engineering for agents closer to software architecture than simple instruction writing.
As AI capabilities improve, some forms of prompt engineering become less necessary—better models require less hand-holding. But the discipline of clearly specifying intent and structuring complex instructions remains valuable, and for agent systems it has been largely subsumed by the broader practice of context engineering: deciding not just how to phrase a single instruction, but what information, tool results, memory, and history the model should be looking at on every turn. Prompt engineering remains the unit; context engineering is the system around it. The successor to both, harness engineering, addresses the infrastructure that runs them.
