Reddit

Reddit is a social media platform organized around topic-specific communities (subreddits) that has become one of the most valuable sources of human-generated text data for AI training. With billions of posts and comments spanning virtually every topic, Reddit represents a massive corpus of natural human conversation, opinions, and knowledge.

Reddit's data licensing deals with AI companies — most notably a reported $60 million annual deal with Google — highlight how human-generated content platforms have become strategic assets in the AI economy. Reddit's IPO in 2024 was partly valued on the strength of its data licensing potential.

In the knowledge and substrate layer, Reddit serves dual roles: as a training data source that helps models understand natural human discourse, and as a knowledge base that AI search engines and agents increasingly reference for authentic human perspectives and recommendations.

Reddit in AI Citations (2026)

By 2026 the second role is measurable: Reddit is the first or second most-cited domain on every major answer engine Ahrefs tracks. The figures below are each engine's share of citations among its 50 most-cited domains, not a share of all citations.

The pattern is not universal. Goodie's study of 1.86 million social citations across ten AI surfaces (January to August 2026) found that Claude "cites Reddit at effectively zero across the entire period, the only major model for which that's true". Reddit's weight in AI citations is also a reminder of where answers come from in general: a June 2026 analysis of roughly 168,000 citations found 85.7% pointing to sites the brand in question does not own (Żatuchin, arXiv). What people say about a product in a thread is, for most engines, more likely to be quoted than the product's own page, which is why community discussion is now treated as a form of earned media.

The ChatGPT Drop and the Denominator Problem

Reddit's position is high and unstable. In mid-August 2026 two independent panels recorded ChatGPT sharply reducing how often it cited Reddit. Promptwatch data published by Semrush on August 26, and labelled provisional, showed Reddit falling from 3.8% to 0.5% of all ChatGPT citations. Goodie reported Reddit at 8.0% of ChatGPT's total citations for August 1–13 and 2.9% for August 14–25. Neither company announced or explained the change.

These numbers cannot be laid next to Ahrefs' 16.8%. Ahrefs divides by the citations of the top 50 domains only, the other two divide by every citation ChatGPT made, and each panel runs a different prompt set. A share is only meaningful alongside its denominator and its date, and comparisons hold within one panel over time, not across vendors. The direction is the dependable part: on the two panels that measured the same weeks, Reddit lost well over half its ChatGPT share within days.

Such swings are routine. Goodie counted 16 changes in how AI models source social content over seven months, five of them reversals and none announced, and separate research finds roughly 65% of the sources cited for a given prompt change from one day to the next (Schulte, Bleeker and Kaufmann, April 2026). A Reddit presence built on genuine participation is a durable asset; a visibility plan that depends on one engine's current appetite for Reddit is not.
