Synthetic Media
Synthetic media is the umbrella term for content — images, video, audio, text, and 3D assets — generated or substantially modified by AI systems. It encompasses everything from AI-generated images and synthetic video to voice cloning, AI music, and LLM-generated text. The defining characteristic is that the content appears to be naturally produced but is partially or entirely machine-generated.
The technology has progressed at extraordinary speed. In 2020, AI-generated images were obviously artificial — distorted hands, incoherent backgrounds, uncanny faces. By 2026, diffusion models produce photorealistic images indistinguishable from photographs. AI-generated video has gone from seconds of blurry output to minutes of coherent, high-resolution content. Voice cloning requires just seconds of reference audio to produce convincing speech in any language.
The creative applications are transformative for the creator economy. Independent filmmakers use AI video generation for pre-visualization and effects. Musicians use AI composition tools for scoring and experimentation. Game developers generate concept art, textures, and assets at a fraction of the traditional cost. Marketing teams produce personalized visual content at scale. The production capabilities that once required studios and teams are increasingly accessible to individuals.
The concerns are equally significant. Deepfakes — synthetic media depicting real people doing or saying things they never did — are the most visible threat vector, posing dangers to political discourse, personal reputation, and trust in media. Detection and provenance are active research areas. AI-based detection models attempt to identify synthetic content through statistical artifacts, but the arms race between generation and detection favors generators. Content provenance standards — particularly C2PA and Content Credentials — embed cryptographic metadata in media at the point of creation, establishing a chain of custody that can verify authenticity. This "prove it's real" approach using public key cryptography may be more sustainable than "detect what's fake."
The regulatory response is evolving. The EU AI Act requires labeling of AI-generated content. China mandates watermarking of synthetic media. Various jurisdictions are passing laws specifically targeting deepfakes, particularly non-consensual intimate imagery and election-related misinformation. The intersection of synthetic media with content moderation and platform responsibility creates complex policy challenges that will define the media landscape for years to come.
