Beamable

What Is Beamable?

Beamable is a serverless backend-as-a-service platform designed for live service game development. It provides game studios with a comprehensive suite of tools—including player authentication, matchmaking, virtual economy management, analytics, content management, and generative AI integration—all accessible through native SDKs for Unity and Unreal Engine. By abstracting away the complexity of server infrastructure, Beamable enables developers to focus on gameplay and creative design rather than backend engineering and DevOps.

Architecture and Core Capabilities

At the heart of Beamable is a microservices architecture that allows developers to write and deploy server-authoritative C# logic directly from within their game engine editor. These microservices run in Beamable's managed cloud and can be used for everything from inventory validation to tournament orchestration. The platform's Admin Portal provides a unified interface for LiveOps management, enabling teams to configure events, update content, manage player support, and monitor analytics without requiring code deployments. Beamable supports real-time and turn-based multiplayer models using relay server technology, along with leaderboards, tournaments, and social features that scale automatically with player demand.

Web3 and Decentralized Infrastructure

Beamable bridges traditional game backends with Web3 capabilities, supporting blockchain integrations across Solana, Polygon, Ethereum, Sui, and the Mythos Chain. Developers can implement NFT-based digital ownership, on-chain authentication, player wallets, and tokenized economies using drag-and-drop tooling within the SDK. The company also launched the Beamable Network, a Solana-based decentralized infrastructure layer offering distributed compute, decentralized storage, and high-speed transactions for game developers. Through the Beamable Foundation, the platform has pursued open-source initiatives focused on decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN) and new standards for live game operations.

AI Integration and the Agentic Economy

Beamable has embraced artificial intelligence as a core component of modern game development. The platform's microservices architecture enables developers to integrate generative AI features—such as dynamic content generation and AI-driven NPCs—directly into their game servers without managing separate AI infrastructure. A notable partnership with Upheaval Games connected Beamable's backend to Dreamer, an AI-powered game creation tool, allowing AI-generated content to be deployed directly to production with no additional DevOps overhead. This positions Beamable at the intersection of the creator economy and autonomous AI systems, where intelligent agents can participate in game world creation and live operations.

History and Acquisition by Skillz

Beamable evolved from Disruptor Beam, a social gaming company founded by Jon Radoff in 2010 that produced titles such as Game of Thrones Ascent. After divesting its game titles, the company reorganized and relaunched as Beamable to focus exclusively on backend infrastructure for game developers. In January 2026, competitive gaming platform Skillz (NYSE: SKLZ) acquired Beamable's technology to build a full-stack solution for creating, operating, and monetizing competitive live games. The Beamable leadership team—including CEO Jon Radoff—remained to continue platform development, integrating Beamable's backend capabilities with Skillz's competitive gaming and monetization ecosystem.
