Descript vs OpenMontage

Comparison

Descript and OpenMontage both let people make video by talking to an AI, but they start from opposite ends. Descript is a mature, shipping editor where you edit a recording by editing its transcript (see transcript-based editing). Its Underlord co-editor runs on a choice of Claude, Gemini or GPT models, and Descript MCP lets outside agents such as Claude and ChatGPT work in its projects. OpenMontage is an open-source pipeline, published in March 2026 under AGPL-3.0, that a coding agent runs from a brief: research, script, generated or stock visuals, narration, music and render.

The two overlap more than they did a few months ago. Descript now generates shots: since October 13, 2026 its paid plans have defaulted to MiniMax H3 Max Turbo, and Gemini Omni Flash was added in August. OpenMontage, for its part, has talking-head, podcast-repurpose and clip-factory pipelines for footage people bring. This page compares them as of October 2026 and says where each one is ahead.

Detailed Analysis

Where Descript Is Ahead

Descript is a finished product. It records, including remote sessions in Rooms, then transcribes, cleans up voices with Studio Sound and edits, all in one polished app with live collaboration and comments on every plan and nothing to install. Its transcript editing is the reference for the category, and its Premiere and Final Cut Pro timeline export lets a story cut move to a finishing editor. It also has a company behind it, published plans and support. For podcasts, interviews and talking-head shows, and for teams who need a shared tool this week, it is the stronger choice.

Where OpenMontage Is Ahead

OpenMontage is open source and can run with no API keys at all, using Piper for narration, open archives and stock libraries for footage, and Remotion for rendering. Its model choice is far broader: its provider guide lists adapters for more than 20 cloud video services plus open models on a local GPU, chosen by a scored selector that logs its reasons. It can research a topic before scripting, build a montage from real archival footage retrieved by meaning, and run from five different coding agents on macOS, Linux or Windows. Every stage is a YAML manifest or Markdown skill that a team can read and change, and approval gates and budget caps keep a person in charge of creative choices and spending.

Trade-offs to Weigh

OpenMontage has no tagged release yet, no recording, no timeline export and no shared workspace, and its results depend on the agent and models a user configures. Its costs are pay-per-use with each provider, governed by estimates, caps and per-action approvals rather than a monthly plan. Two licenses matter for companies. AGPL-3.0 requires anyone who distributes a modified version, or offers one to users over a network, to publish its source. And OpenMontage renders with Remotion, whose license requires a paid company license for organizations of four or more people. Descript's costs are predictable per-seat plans, but media hours and AI credits cap what each plan can do.

Best For

Record and edit a podcast or interview

Descript

Recording, transcript editing and cleanup in one shipping app.

A team that needs a polished, shared app today

Descript

Live collaboration, comments, support and timeline export to Premiere or Final Cut Pro.

An explainer or archival montage from a brief, with no footage

OpenMontage

Research, script, generated or archive visuals, narration and render from one request.

Your own models, your own GPU, a pipeline you can change

OpenMontage

Open source, more than 20 cloud video services plus local models, and readable YAML and Markdown.

The Bottom Line

Choose Descript to edit what you have recorded, especially as a team, and to hand cuts to Premiere or Final Cut Pro. Choose OpenMontage to have a coding agent produce a video from a brief, with your choice of models, footage from open archives and a pipeline you can inspect and change. Both now generate shots; the real difference is whether the work starts from a recording or from an idea.
