OpenMontage vs VEED OpenEdit

Comparison

OpenMontage and VEED's OpenEdit are the two best-known open-source pipelines that a coding agent operates to make video, and both appeared in 2026. OpenMontage, published by the GitHub developer Calesthio on March 29, 2026 under AGPL-3.0, is a full production system: 12 pipelines go from research and script to generated or retrieved footage, narration, music and render. OpenEdit, announced by VEED on August 4, 2026, is an Apache-2.0 agent skill: the agent transcribes a clip, composes the edit as an HTML page, renders it frame by frame in a browser and looks at the frames to fix what it sees.

The two differ in license, scope and who stands behind them. OpenMontage is led by one developer with a large community and aims to produce whole videos. OpenEdit is maintained by a company and focuses on editing, captions and motion graphics for footage, slides or stills a user already has. The comparison below reflects both projects on October 24, 2026.

Detailed Analysis

Where OpenEdit Is Ahead

OpenEdit's Apache-2.0 license lets a company build it into a product, including a hosted one, without publishing its own changes, as long as it keeps the license and notices. It installs into an agent with one command, sets itself up on first run, and stays focused: captions, cuts, reframing and branded motion graphics on a clip the user already has. It inspects its own rendered frames and fixes what it sees, re-renders only the stretch that changed, and has a company behind it with hosted transcription and VEED's Fabric model for talking-head clips. For a quick, well-scoped edit from Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI, it is the simpler tool.

Where OpenMontage Is Ahead

OpenMontage does much more. It researches, scripts, plans scenes, sources or generates visuals, narrates, scores and renders, across 12 pipelines and more than 20 video-generation services plus local GPU models. It can build a montage from real archive footage retrieved by meaning, it enforces approval gates and budget caps at each creative stage, and it supports five coding agents. Its community is about 40 times larger by GitHub stars, though it has no tagged release and relies heavily on one maintainer.

Licenses and What Changed

The licenses point in different directions. AGPL-3.0 requires anyone who distributes a modified OpenMontage, or offers one to users over a network, to publish the source, which matters to anyone embedding it in a hosted service. Apache-2.0 has no such requirement. OpenEdit has also changed since launch. In August, VEED described an Apache-2.0 pipeline with separate, closed renderer binaries; the current README and NOTICE list the project under Apache-2.0 only and describe rendering in a downloaded browser. Its hosted features, including transcription and Fabric, run under VEED's own terms.

Best For

Captions, cuts and branded graphics on your own clip

VEED OpenEdit

A focused skill that edits, captions and re-renders only what changed.

A permissive license to build into a product

VEED OpenEdit

Apache-2.0, with no obligation to publish your changes.

A whole video from a brief

OpenMontage

Research, script, visuals, narration, music and render across 12 pipelines.

Archive montages and a wide choice of models

OpenMontage

CLIP retrieval from open archives and more than 20 video services plus local models.

The Bottom Line

Choose OpenEdit for agent-driven edits, captions and motion graphics on footage you have, with a permissive license and a one-command install. Choose OpenMontage to have an agent produce a whole video from a brief, with broad model choice, archive footage and approval gates. Both are young and changing quickly, so check their repositories before committing to either.
