ElevenLabs vs Higgs Audio
ComparisonElevenLabs is the commercial leader in AI voice: a hosted platform for text-to-speech, transcription, dubbing, cloning and music, valued at $22 billion in a September 2026 employee tender. Its newest models, Eleven v4 and v4 Turbo, arrived on 2026-09-28. Higgs Audio is the voice-model family from Boson AI, and its current flagship, Higgs TTS 3, is something ElevenLabs does not offer: downloadable weights. Boson released it on 2026-06-04, with about 4 billion parameters, 102 languages and zero-shot voice cloning.
The comparison is less about voice quality than about terms. ElevenLabs sells a service with a commercial license on every paid plan. Higgs TTS 3 is open-weight but not open source: it ships under a research and non-commercial license with a grant that lets creators publish and monetize what they make, while any product, API or app built on it needs a separate commercial license. Getting that distinction right is most of the decision.
A note on names: Boson is inconsistent. The Hugging Face model card and license say "Higgs TTS 3", the GitHub README says "Higgs Audio v3", and the hosted API calls the model higgs-tts-3. This page uses Higgs Audio for the family and Higgs TTS 3 for the model.

Detailed Analysis
The License Is the Product Decision
Higgs TTS 3's license is titled "Boson Higgs TTS 3 Research and Non-Commercial License Agreement" (last updated 8 July 2026, after the model's release). By default it allows research and non-commercial use. Its Creator Use Grant then carves out a specific commercial right: Boson grants "Digital Creators" a royalty-free, limited license "to use the Higgs Materials to create, reproduce, publish, distribute, and monetize Creator Content", defined to cover "podcasts, videos, audiobooks, social media posts, and similar creative content". The condition is a credit, in the audio or prominently in text: "This audio was created with Boson AI's Higgs Audio — https://www.boson.ai/higgs-audio".
The grant does not cover building on the model. It excludes "hosting, serving, or otherwise making the Higgs Materials available to others, whether via an API, SaaS offering, plug-in, hosted tool, or end-user application", and "embedding or integrating the Higgs Materials in a product, application, or service made available to third parties". Those uses need a separate commercial license from Boson. The license also bans cloning a voice without consent, impersonation, fraud, election deception and biometric surveillance.
In plain terms: a podcaster can narrate and monetize an episode with Higgs TTS 3 if they credit it. A startup cannot put it behind its own voice API, or inside an app, without a deal with Boson. ElevenLabs is simpler, because every paid plan includes a commercial license, though its free plan does not and requires an "elevenlabs.io" credit in the title. The previous generation was different again: Higgs Audio v2's code was Apache-2.0 while its weights used a community license based on Meta's Llama 3 license, with a threshold of 100,000 annual active users.
Voice Quality, Languages and Control
On paper the two are close in range. Eleven v4 covers 90+ languages, and Higgs TTS 3's model card lists 102, of which Boson reports 85 under 5% word or character error rate when its output is transcribed. Both support expressive control in the script: ElevenLabs through inline tags such as [laughs], Higgs through 21 emotion tokens and style and sound-effect tags. Both clone a voice from a short reference.
ElevenLabs has the stronger track record in long-form production, and Eleven v4 added better multi-speaker consistency and pronunciation control. ElevenLabs cites blind-test preference and an Artificial Analysis ranking for v4; those are vendor claims, and Boson publishes its own error-rate figures. Neither replaces listening to your own scripts in both.
Running It Yourself
Open weights mean Higgs TTS 3 can run on your own hardware, with no per-character fee and no audio leaving the building. That matters for privacy-sensitive work and for teams that want to fine-tune or pin a model version. The cost is infrastructure. Boson publishes its latency benchmarks on a single NVIDIA H100, a mean of 617 ms at one request and 1,079 ms at 16 concurrent requests, served through SGLang-Omni or vLLM-Omni. It does not state a minimum GPU. For comparison, the previous Higgs Audio v2 recommended 24 GB of GPU memory. This is a data-center model, not an on-device one.
ElevenLabs requires no infrastructure at all, and its Flash and Turbo models are built for low latency (about 75 ms of model latency for Flash v2.5, about 150 ms to first speech for v4 Turbo). For a voice agent, that gap is decisive.
Hosted Use and Price
Boson also runs a hosted API, at $0.015 per 1,000 characters of input text, with generated audio not billed separately and a $10 trial credit. That is several times cheaper per character than ElevenLabs' self-serve plans, which range from $6 a month for 30,000 credits to $990 a month for 6 million, with Flash and Turbo models at 0.5 to 1 credit per character. The catch is maturity. Boson's docs say requests should stay around 300 characters and that longer text is "not yet reliably supported", and word timestamps are offered only for English, Chinese and Spanish. ElevenLabs accepts up to 10,000 characters per request on v4 and wraps the voice in a full production toolset.
Beyond the Voice
ElevenLabs is a platform; Higgs is a model. ElevenLabs adds Scribe v2 transcription with word timestamps and diarization, dubbing into 90+ languages, Music v2.5, Voice Isolator and the ElevenAgents platform. Boson offers speech generation. A team that needs narration, translation and cleanup in one place will find ElevenLabs far more complete; a team that only needs a voice, under its own control, may not need the rest.

Research and evaluation
Higgs Audio (Boson AI)Open weights can be inspected, benchmarked and fine-tuned under the research license.
The Bottom Line
ElevenLabs is the default for anyone shipping a product, running voice agents or producing audio at scale: the license is simple, the latency is low, and the platform covers far more than speech. Higgs TTS 3 is the most capable open-weight alternative to it in October 2026, and a real option for creators and researchers who want strong multilingual voices they can run themselves.
Read Boson's license before building anything. Its Creator Use Grant is generous for publishing content and closed for building products, and the model's naming and documentation are still settling.
