OpusClip

OpusClip is an AI tool that turns long videos into short clips for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. It finds the moments most likely to hold attention, reframes them vertically, adds animated captions and can schedule the posts. The San Francisco company behind it, which operates at opus.pro, was founded in 2022 and is led by CEO Young Zhao. In March 2025 it raised $20 million from SoftBank's Vision Fund 2 at a $215 million valuation, bringing its total funding to $50 million. At the time it had 10 million users, and its site now claims more than 20 million creators and businesses. It's one of the clearest examples of AI video editing built for the creator economy rather than for professional post-production.

Products (October 2026)

  • ClipAnything: OpusClip's clipping model, which it says works on any genre (vlogs, gaming, sports, interviews, explainers) and can pull moments that match a natural-language prompt.
  • ReframeAnything: automatic reframing to vertical or square formats, with object tracking to keep the subject in frame.
  • Captions and editing: animated auto-captions (the company claims more than 97% accuracy), an editor for adjusting clips, brand templates and team workspaces.
  • Publishing: scheduling and posting to connected social accounts, plus an API for automated workflows.
  • Agent Opus: which OpusClip calls "the first AI video agent for social media". It turns an idea, an audio file or brand assets into finished social videos and ad variants.

Pricing runs from a free plan with 60 minutes of processing a month to paid Pro and Business plans.

The MCP Server

OpusClip runs a hosted Model Context Protocol server at mcp.opus.pro, so AI agents in Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, ChatGPT and other MCP clients can clip and publish video on a user's behalf. Users sign in through OAuth. The server exposes 29 tools: 13 read tools that run without a prompt, 14 write tools that each require the user's approval on every call, and 2 deprecated placeholders. Running tools requires a Pro Beta, Max or Business plan. The launcher is MIT-licensed and listed in the official MCP Registry. Asking for approval on every write is a sensible default when an agent can post to a public account (see plan-and-apply).

How It Compares

OpusClip is a specialist in repurposing. CapCut offers auto reframe and captions inside a general-purpose editor. Descript and VEED are broader editors with their own AI agents, and Kapwing's Kai agent gained an autonomous mode in August 2026. Professional tools such as Eddie AI aim at rough cuts for editors rather than finished social clips. For podcasters, streamers and marketers who publish short-form video from long recordings, OpusClip is one of the most direct options, and its MCP server makes it one of the few clipping services an agent can operate. The full list of agent-operable editors is on video editing MCP servers.
