Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is the conversational search experience inside Google Search, in which a Gemini model answers a query in prose, cites supporting links, and keeps context across follow-up questions. It is the closest thing Google has to ChatGPT Search or Perplexity, and by reach it is among the largest AI answer products in use.
Google said at I/O on May 19, 2026 that "AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch," one year after its debut. On the same day it made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode globally.
How It Relates to AI Overviews
AI Overviews are one-shot summaries embedded in a normal results page. AI Mode is a separate surface built for multi-turn conversation. Google has steadily merged the two: since January 27, 2026, "Show more" on an AI Overview opens AI Mode, and Google's I/O 2026 announcement describes users asking a follow-up "right from an AI Overview" and flowing into "a conversational back and forth with AI Mode." In practice an AI Overview is now often the first turn of an AI Mode session.
Both sit on the same foundation. Google's documentation says both "may use a 'query fan-out' technique", issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, and that a page needs only to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a supporting link in either. See query fan-out for the mechanism and AI Overviews vs Google AI Mode for the differences.
Citation Behaviour
The best public evidence on what earns AI Mode visibility is correlational. Ahrefs' December 2025 study of 75,000 brands found that the factor most associated with appearing in AI Mode was YouTube mentions, meaning the brand name in a video title, transcript or description (Spearman correlation 0.740), ahead of branded web mentions, and well ahead of Domain Rating and backlinks, which correlated at roughly 0.25 to 0.33 across the engines studied. These are associations across brands, not proof that adding video mentions causes visibility.
Controlled evidence is thinner and less flattering to common advice. Ahrefs' May 2026 test of adding JSON-LD to 1,885 pages measured a 2.4% change in AI Mode citations, which the authors place within noise. Google's own guidance says no special markup or machine-readable files are required.
AI Mode has also become a real channel for local decisions: in a BrightLocal survey of 455 AI users published in March 2026, 23% said they use Google AI Mode for business recommendations, against 31% for ChatGPT.
Volatility: the September 2026 YouTube Drop
AI Mode's source mix can change abruptly and without announcement. OtterlyAI's index, which runs 1,600 prompts daily across 16 US industries, recorded YouTube at 13.5% of all Google AI Mode citations on September 1, 2026. The share was 11.0% on September 13, 6.8% on September 14 and 3.1% on September 15, then settled between 3.4% and 3.9% from September 16, with no recovery in the days observed. Otterly describes it as a 72% cut in 48 hours.
Three cautions apply. This is one vendor's prompt panel, not a census of AI Mode. The cause is unconfirmed; Otterly reads it as a deliberate platform change, but Google has not said so. And it does not contradict the Ahrefs correlation above, which measures brand mentions on YouTube rather than how often YouTube URLs are cited. The practical lesson is narrower: a visibility strategy that depends on one cited platform inside one engine is exposed to changes nobody announces. Goodie counted 16 unannounced changes in how AI models sourced social platforms over seven months of 2026.
Measurement and Control
AI Mode is hard to isolate in analytics. Google states that sites appearing in AI features "are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console" under the Web search type, so AI Mode impressions and clicks are blended with ordinary search. Visibility therefore has to be sampled from outside by running prompts repeatedly, which is the approach described under AI visibility measurement.
Opting out is all-or-nothing for now. Snippet controls such as nosnippet limit what Google can show anywhere in Search. Under a UK Competition and Markets Authority order, Google is testing a Search Console toggle that removes a site from AI Overviews and AI Mode, starting in the UK. Google-Extended remains a training-only control and does not affect AI Mode.
Where It Is Heading
Google is extending AI Mode from answering to acting. Its I/O 2026 announcement lists information agents for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, agentic booking for local experiences and services in the US, and agentic calling for categories such as home repair, beauty and pet care, all scheduled for summer 2026. That moves AI Mode toward agentic commerce, where being selected matters more than being clicked.
