ChatGPT Search vs Google AI Mode
ComparisonChatGPT search is web retrieval inside OpenAI's assistant, and Google AI Mode is the conversational search experience built on Google's own index. ChatGPT search and Google AI Mode are the two largest places where a person can ask a multi-part question and get a synthesized, cited answer. They reach that answer from opposite directions: one is a chatbot that learned to search, the other a search engine that learned to converse.
For a brand or publisher the differences are structural. Eligibility for AI Mode is inherited from Google Search, so a page that is indexed and snippet-eligible already qualifies. Eligibility for ChatGPT search depends on a separate crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and on a separate index. The two draw on different sources, expose different controls and offer different visibility into results. Being present in one says little about the other, and a team should expect to run two measurement tracks even when the underlying content work is shared.

Detailed Analysis
Reach and Intent
Neither company publishes a figure that isolates search use, so reach has to be read from adjacent numbers. Google said at I/O in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter, and since January 27, 2026 the “Show more” link on an AI Overview has opened AI Mode directly. Pew's survey of 5,119 US adults (fielded February 2026) found 44% use ChatGPT, against 24% for Gemini.
Intent data favours the chatbot for considered purchases. G2's April 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software decision-makers found 51% start software research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% a year earlier, and 69% chose a different vendor than planned based on AI guidance. The survey did not single out ChatGPT, and it predates much of AI Mode's growth, so it shows where research habits are moving more than it ranks the two products.
Eligibility and Crawlers
AI Mode adds no technical requirement beyond ordinary search. Google's documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and that no new machine-readable files or markup are needed. Opting out is the hard part: snippet directives limit AI Mode and normal listings together, and Google-Extended governs Gemini training and grounding, not Search.
ChatGPT search separates functions across three agents. OAI-SearchBot builds the search index and honours robots.txt; GPTBot gathers training data and can be blocked independently; ChatGPT-User fetches pages on a person's request, where OpenAI says robots.txt rules “may not apply.” The split gives publishers a cleaner choice than Google offers: a site can refuse training and still be eligible for citation. It also creates a failure mode, because a blanket rule against OpenAI's bots removes the site from ChatGPT search. The AI crawlers page covers the agents in detail.
Source Mix
The two engines do not consult the same web. A SIGIR 2026 study of 11,500 real queries found cross-platform source overlap below 0.2 Jaccard. Platform access explains part of it. Checked in September 2026, tiktok.com and instagram.com disallowed OpenAI's crawlers while allowing Googlebot, and Goodie's September 2026 study of 1.86 million social citations found Instagram and Facebook citations sit almost entirely on Google surfaces. YouTube, which Google owns, accounted for 3.4% to 3.9% of all AI Mode citations in late September 2026 by Otterly's index and 0.148% in ChatGPT. In Ahrefs' September 2026 list, ChatGPT's top-50 share was led by Reddit at 16.8% and Wikipedia at 7.0%.
Both mixes are unstable. YouTube's AI Mode share was 13.5% at the start of the same month. Reddit's share of all ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% to 0.5% in mid-August 2026 according to provisional Promptwatch data reported by Semrush. Despite the different sources, the off-site signal looks alike: Ahrefs' December 2025 brand study found mentions in YouTube titles, transcripts and descriptions correlated at about 0.74 with visibility in both.
Citation Weight
Zhang, He and Yao (April 2026) measured a mean of 6.88 citations per prompt in ChatGPT with a per-page influence of 0.27, against 12.06 citations and an influence of 0.058 for Google's AI answers. The study's Google condition is not broken out by surface here, so the comparison is indicative for AI Mode. The direction is clear: ChatGPT relies on fewer pages and takes more from each.
For ChatGPT there is also evidence about category leadership and downstream behaviour. Semrush and Growth Memo (July 2026) found only 15.2% of 1,094 categories had a clear “owner,” and Similarweb data reported in June 2026 found people shown a brand in a ChatGPT recommendation were 2.5 times more likely to visit within seven days, 55.9% of them through branded search. That last figure is a reminder that part of ChatGPT's effect lands in Google.
Measurement
Neither surface gives a publisher a clean report. Google folds AI Mode into the “Web” search type in Search Console's Performance report. No comparable owner-side report for ChatGPT search was identified for this page. In both cases AI visibility measurement means running prompts repeatedly and reporting the spread, since day-to-day similarity of cited sources averages only 0.34 to 0.42 (Schulte, Bleeker and Kaufmann, April 2026).
Best For
If you can only fund one measurement track this quarter
ChatGPT searchIt needs its own crawler access and its own sampling, and nothing in your Google reporting reveals how you perform there. AI Mode at least inherits your search eligibility.
If your search fundamentals are already strong
Google AI ModeYou are eligible by default. Sample your comparison prompts to confirm you are cited, then move on to the engine where you start from zero.
If your audience is on Instagram, Facebook or YouTube
Google AI ModeThose platforms surface mainly through Google. Instagram blocks OpenAI's crawlers, and YouTube's citation share in ChatGPT is a fraction of a percent.
If you sell B2B software
ChatGPT searchG2's 2026 survey shows buyers starting research in chatbots and changing vendor choices there. Prioritise the assistant and check AI Mode second.
If you want to refuse AI training but stay visible
ChatGPT searchBlocking GPTBot while allowing OAI-SearchBot does exactly this. Google's equivalent, Google-Extended, also leaves Search inclusion untouched, but there is no way to leave AI Mode without snippet restrictions outside the UK test.
If you are a local business
BothBrightLocal (March 2026) found 31% of AI users ask ChatGPT for business recommendations and 23% use AI Mode. Neither can be skipped.
If you are deciding where to earn mentions
BothBrand mentions correlate with visibility almost identically in the two engines. One earned-media programme serves both, even though the cited sources differ.
The Bottom Line
Google AI Mode is the easier surface to qualify for and the harder one to see into. A site that is healthy in Google Search is already eligible, and its performance is buried inside ordinary search reporting. ChatGPT search requires a deliberate decision to admit OAI-SearchBot and has no owner-side report comparable to Search Console that this page could identify.
The sources differ enough that results will not transfer. Google's surface reaches into YouTube, Facebook and Instagram; ChatGPT, shut out of several social platforms, leans on community and reference sites and weights each cited page more heavily. The common ground is that brands mentioned widely by third parties tend to appear in both.
Most teams should confirm crawler access for ChatGPT first, because an accidental block there is silent, then sample the same set of high-intent prompts in both engines on a schedule. Treat the figures above as dated readings from two systems that revise their sourcing without announcement.
