ChatGPT Search

ChatGPT Search is the capability within ChatGPT that retrieves live web pages, uses them to compose an answer, and cites them as sources. It turns a conversational model into an answer engine, and it reaches a large audience: Pew found in a February 2026 survey that 44% of US adults use ChatGPT, more than any other chatbot.

The defining traits, on current evidence, are that ChatGPT cites fewer pages than its rivals, leans on each one more heavily, and changes its source mix without notice.

Three Crawlers, Three Jobs

OpenAI documents separate user agents, and the distinction decides what a robots.txt rule actually does.

User agentPurposerobots.txt
OAI-SearchBotBuilds the index used "to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features"Honoured. "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers"
GPTBotCrawls content "that may be used in training" foundation modelsHonoured. Disallowing it signals content should not be used for training
ChatGPT-UserFetches a page when a user's request or a Custom GPT calls for it"Because these actions are initiated by a user, robots.txt rules may not apply"

The practical consequence is that blocking GPTBot does not remove a site from ChatGPT Search, and blocking OAI-SearchBot does. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect. A fourth agent, OAI-AdsBot, visits only pages submitted as ads. The wider picture is covered under AI crawlers.

Fewer Citations, More Weight on Each

Zhang, He and Yao (arXiv, April 2026) analysed more than 21,000 citations from 602 controlled prompts and separated two stages: selection, meaning whether a page is cited, and absorption, meaning how much it shapes the answer. ChatGPT averaged 6.88 citations per prompt, against 12.06 for Google and 16.35 for Perplexity. But the mean influence of each cited page on the answer was 0.27 for ChatGPT, compared with 0.058 for Google and 0.065 for Perplexity.

A ChatGPT citation is therefore harder to win and worth more when won. The same study found that question-and-answer formatting alone did not raise influence, and that encyclopedic pages were absorbed far more than news pages (0.21 against 0.07).

Which brands appear is more settled in some categories than others. Semrush and Growth Memo (July 2026) examined 1,094 categories and found a clear ChatGPT "owner" in only 15.2% of them, with 53.7% unsettled; where a clear owner existed, it kept first place 90.4% of the time month over month. Ahrefs' correlational study of 75,000 brands (December 2025) found YouTube mentions and branded web mentions more strongly associated with ChatGPT visibility than backlinks or Domain Rating.

Most-Cited Domains and Reddit's Volatility

In Ahrefs' September 2026 tracking of broad US queries, Reddit held 16.8% of citations among ChatGPT's top-cited sources, followed by Wikipedia at 7.0%, Consumer Reports at 3.7% and Forbes at 3.1%. YouTube stood at 2.5%, far below its 22.9% in Google's AI Overviews on the same measure.

Those shares are not stable. Promptwatch data reported by Semrush on August 26, 2026 showed Reddit's share of all ChatGPT citations falling from 3.8% to 0.5% in mid-August 2026. Two cautions: Promptwatch calls the size of the drop "provisional" and says it cannot rule out a problem in its own data collection, and its denominator is all citations, whereas Ahrefs measures share among top-cited sources, so the two sets of numbers cannot be compared directly. OpenAI's response was that it does not set a fixed level of visibility for individual sites.

Freshness is a steadier pattern. Seer Interactive (July 2026) found that 73% of the pages ChatGPT cited had been updated within the past year.

Ads

OpenAI announced on January 16, 2026 that it would test advertising in ChatGPT, and press reports date the start of the test to February 9, 2026. As described in OpenAI's announcement and contemporaneous coverage, the test covers logged-in adults in the United States on the Free and Go tiers, with Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise remaining ad-free. Ads appear at the bottom of answers when a sponsored product or service is relevant to the conversation, are labelled and separated from the answer, and are not shown near sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics. OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and that conversations are kept private from advertisers. The scope of the programme may have changed since; these are launch-period facts.

What It Means for Visibility

Demand has moved. In G2's April 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software decision-makers, 51% said they start software research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% a year earlier. Much of the resulting traffic never shows up as a ChatGPT referral, a problem examined under AI referral traffic. For a comparison with Google's equivalent, see ChatGPT Search vs Google AI Mode.
