Physical AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that understand and interact with the physical world through perception, reasoning, and motor control. These systems are housed in autonomous machines such as humanoid robots, autonomous vehicles, industrial manipulators, drones, and smart warehouse infrastructure. Physical AI represents the convergence of advances in large language models, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and robotics hardware into systems capable of general-purpose physical interaction with unpredictable environments.

Developers train and validate robot behaviors inside physics-based digital twins—highly accurate virtual replicas of factories, warehouses, streets, and other physical environments—before deploying them in the real world. In manufacturing, physical AI systems perform assembly, quality inspection, and material handling with increasing autonomy. In healthcare, surgical robots and assistive devices use embodied intelligence for precision tasks. Agriculture deploys autonomous harvesters and crop-monitoring drones. NVIDIA has positioned itself as the primary infrastructure provider with its Omniverse simulation platform, Cosmos world models, and Isaac robotics stack. Humanoid robot development is led by Figure AI (Figure 02), Boston Dynamics (Atlas), Tesla (Optimus), and China's Unitree, which entered 2026 with the R1 humanoid priced at $5,600. A warehouse robot that re-plans its route when an obstacle appears uses the same reasoning architecture as a software agent that re-plans a workflow when an API fails. This convergence is accelerated by spatial computing technologies that provide shared representations of 3D environments usable by both AR/VR interfaces and robotic systems. The long-term trajectory points toward general-purpose physical agents that can learn new tasks from demonstration or instruction, operating in homes, cities, and workplaces with the adaptability that has historically been unique to humans.
